LAST season’s mini-league champions Uplyme and Lyme Regis sent out a strong message to Devon Cricket League D Division East opponents with a commanding eight-wicket victory over Sidmouth 3rds, played at Newton Poppleford.

With several new players in their line-up, Uplyme won the toss and put Sidmouth 3rds into bat and skittled them out for just 66 in 23 overs. The only batsmen to put up and real resistance was Tom Clay who made 44.

Newcomer Andrew Harrison looked the most dangerous with the ball, finishing with figures of  3 for 7 off four overs. Another new signing, Gareth Stoneman, Tyler Wellman and Steve Batey all took two apiece.

Uplyme knocked off the required runs in 15 overs with Steve Batey (23) and Tyler Wellman (15) top scoring.

Uplyme have their first home match this coming Saturday (May 8) against Clyst Hydon with a 1pm start.

Sidmouth 3rds 2 points, Uplyme & Lyme Regis 20 Points.

Before the game, Uplyme received a video “good luck” message from England test cricketer Dom Bess. It was arranged by new signing Louis Strong, an actor, who fronts a podcast which recently featured the England players. Louis, a left-arm quick bowler, recently moved to the area.

In his message, Bess wished the Uplyme club “all the best for today” but quickly added “but not too much because you are are playing Sidmouth, my home club Sidmouth”.
