Uplyme cricketers building a bright future

All may look quiet and calm at the Uplyme & Lyme Regis cricket ground, but beneath the surface, the club is busy preparing for big changes as the 2018 season approaches.

2017 was challenging for the club, but 2018 holds special opportunities, with the Devon Cricket League becoming ‘all through’, this means that all club first and second teams play together within the same league system.

AGM elects new committee

cricketThe club committee has been expanded to twelve, combining experience with new blood.

Remaining in post are: Brian Rattenbury as President, Gary Rowland – Vice Chairman, Neil Price – Treasurer, Derek Wellman – Secretary, Eddie Clarke – Ground and Welfare Officer, with Mark Brimicombe, perhaps rashly, entrusted with the Bar again.

We are pleased to welcome members to new posts.

New club skipper Harvey Brimicombe will applying experience gained in his exchange visit with our partner club Deepdene Bears in Melbourne, Australia, to lead the first team as it has the chance to lock horns with second XI sides of some of Devon’s Premier League clubs.

Harvey reacted to his appointment is characteristic style: Very proud and privileged to be named club skipper and take on the challenge of helping to lead the first team to success in 2018 – whilst ensuring we all have a great time doing it!”

The 2nd XI is approaching 2018 in novel fashion in the lower reaches of the league, by appointing Harvey’s dad Mark Brimicombe to head a corps of ‘experienced’ skippers as the challenging captaincy responsibility is shared – no arguments between 1st and 2nd team skippers this year!

Ian Thomas takes over the Chair, to work with players and committee in the management of the club, focusing on security of cricket on the KG5 ground and ensuring the club remains sustainable for the longer-term future.

25 years of grass

We are pleased to welcome Simon Rattenbury as Groundsman – Designate, with his enormous experience of ‘grass’ and its maintenance in the golf course environment. Simon will work with Eddie during the 2018 season, prior to taking on the role of Head Groundsman.

Opportunities for young people across the area

Youth Cricket is a key priority for the club, with Ben Taylor and Simon Rattenbury joining the committee, with special responsibility for teams for girls and boys of secondary school age. Eddie Clarke focusses his special talent on local primary schools in Uplyme, Lyme Regis and Charmouth through the ‘Chance to Shine’ and ‘All Stars’ programmes he so successfully led last in 2017.

Our new Friendly XI skipper Sam Wooster also skippers the team of our friends, the Talbot Arms. This means that the club will be able to offer more ‘social’ cricket, in addition to league cricket for those more ‘competitive’.

With club stalwart Steve Batey completing the committee team, exciting times are guaranteed, we can’t wait – ‘roll on 2018!’
