SOMERSET County Cricket Club is delighted to be able to announce that Gordon Baird will be our new Chairman.
Following an intensive and robust interview procedure, the Nominations Committee unanimously concluded that Mr Baird was the stand-out candidate and the person who best suited the requirements of Somerset County Cricket Club.
Gordon (pictured) lives near Glastonbury and has been a member of Somerset CCC, when work commitments allowed. Gordon’s three sons have all played County Age Group cricket and he currently has a strong link with the club as his youngest son has progressed through the Player Pathway and is currently part of the Academy.
Gordon has extensive senior executive experience across a range of high-profile companies, with over 20 years operating in the sporting goods market internationally.
He has held leadership positions within a number of high profile customer focused organisations including: Managing Director Adidas Northern Europe, Managing Director Timberland Europe, Chief Executive Americana International Ltd (Bench) and Chief Executive Inov-8.
Now pursuing a non-executive career, Gordon has gained Chair experience with Crew Clothing Company Ltd, Inov-8 Ltd, Upper Street Events and is currently Chair of Zoggs International Ltd, an eco-friendly swimwear brand.
After accepting the role, Mr Baird said: “I am delighted to be given the opportunity to become Chairman at such an exciting time in the Club’s development. I do however regret that this opportunity has come about because of the sad passing of Charles Clark and add my condolences to those already expressed.
“Last season’s on-field success, particularly winning the Royal London One-Day Cup and coming so close to replicating this in the Championship, provides a fantastic platform to take the Club forward, both on and off the field.
“I look forward to working with the Board, Executive Teams and Members to optimise the Club’s position in a rapidly changing cricket environment and in moving forward our existing strategy, governance and commercial initiatives.”
Chris Bishop, Chair of the Nominations Committee said: “Throughout the interview process Gordon clearly demonstrated his understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing cricket and in particular Somerset CCC. He also highlighted the important role that effective governance will play going forward and the need for leadership in delivering a clear strategic vision.
“He brings a clear brand and commercial focus, is used to working with a diverse range of stakeholders in challenging environments and has a strong clear understanding of the need for sustainable financial performance.”
Richard Brice will continue in the role of Chairman until the Club AGM in January, during which time there will be a period of transition.
Mr Baird will begin his tenure immediately after the SCCC AGM.
