WITH eight Devon and Exeter League Division One games left to play this season, Lyme Regis 1st team, who have not played a home fixture for 17 weeks due to the heavily waterlogged pitch at the Davey Fort, find themselves in third place and still in with a chance of promotion, although they are being chased by teams with several games in hand.
As the table below shows, University of Exeter 2nds, with 38 points from 16 games have a ten-point lead at the top over second placed Colyton, but the Devon villagers have six games in hand and could end up champions. But the Uni second string will not be able to be promoted because their first team play in the Premier League.
Lyme are in third place with 38 points from 16 games and can be caught by Perry Street & Yonder Hill (25 points from 13 games) and Lapford 1sts (24 points from 14). Chard Town Reserves (with 20 points from 16 games), having being beaten 5-0 by Uni on Saturday’s only Division One game, could well now be out of it.
So Lyme’s home game with Colyton next Saturday will be crucial for the Seasiders and the game will be switched to the G4 pitch at Axminster Leisure Centre due to the state of the Davey Fort pitch.
The Seasiders will be hoping the old adage that it is “better to have points on the board than games in hand” rings true and with a new-found team spirit under caretaker manager Mark Bailey, a victory over Colyton would keep Lyme well in the mix.
