Seasiders seven short for local derby – Reserves’ game called off

MANAGER Gerard Hitchcock leads his team into their fourth Devon & Exeter League Premier division game tomorrow (Saturday, kick-off 3 pm) without seven members of his first team squad due to injuries and unavailability.

The Seasiders will meet close neighbours Seaton Town at the Davey Fort and will be looking for a similar performance that delivered a 3-1 victory at Seaton in their second game of the season.

But they will be without first teasers Dominic Rowe (honeymoon), Julien  Simier (holiday), Ben Vine (injury), Keiran White (injury), Callum Larcombe (working) and Sam Pollard-Jones (unavailable).

But Hitchcock is confident that the players he will be drafting in will step up to a plate and will still be looking for three points to keep pace with the early runners in the Premier Division.

Into the side comes Gary Knight, one of the squad’s most experience players who played a significant role in helping Lyme to gain promotion to the highest standard of football they have ever played at the end of last season.

Hitchcock is also calling on the two Spanish players who impressed last season, Ruben Rogel and Jaime Roderiguez. They both work at the Royal Lion and featured strongly in Lyme’s push for promotion last season. Unfortunately, they are due to return to Spain in October.

Full-back Cam Fowler, who has plenty of first team experience, is also included in the squad.

Lyme made a good start to their Premier introduction with victories over Beer Albion and Seaton Town, but they were beaten 3-1 by the much fancied Colyton on Tuesday, the three goals coming from brothers George, Jake and Will Richards.

They go into tomorrow’s game in eighth place but on the same number of points as the three teams above them who have a better goal average.

Reserves’ game called off

IN just the second week of the season, Lyme Regis Reserves’ away game at Black Swan Town in Devon & Exeter Division Four has been called off because the club cannot field a side.

This means the club will be deducted a point and fined £75. Teignmouth-based Black Swan will get three points.

Club secretary Rob Thomas posted on Facebook this morning: “The Reserves’ game at Black Swan has been cancelled as we are unable to raise a side. Disappointing but it was felt this was the right decision to make considering all the unavailability due to holidays, weddings, work and several injuries.”

Thom urged players and supporters to “get behind the 1st team as they welcome Seaton Town for another local derby looking to complete the double over our seaside neighbours and bounce back from the midweek defeat of Colyton”.

One of the injured players, stalwart Alistair Rattenbury commented: “Ridiculous. Shouldn’t be happening this early in the season! How are we going to field three teams this season if we can’t even field two teams.”
