Sailors tackle windy conditions in latest races

Isla and Ayda Parsons leave the harbour on board PJ, ready to lay the course and help run the race

LYME Regis Sailing Club’s Wednesday evening series continued last week with windy conditions and a big swell greeting sailors on leaving the harbour.

“One or two quickly turned back when they experienced the south-westerly wind strength of 18-20 knots,” said race officer Tim Parsons, assisted by Sarah, Isla and Ayda Parsons who manned the committee boat.

Ray Waspe and Dave Law crewed the patrol boat and were kept busy.

Tim added: “Racing started on time with 15 dinghies taking part. We ran an average lap course to maximise racing time of 45 minutes.

“There were several capsizes and some gear failure due to the conditions! Overall, much fun was had and sailors returned to shore with big grins after an exhilarating evening’s racing.”

Assisting Tim and Sarah were their young daughters Isla and Ayda, undaunted as they accompanied their parents in the rough conditions, following in the footsteps of mum and dad – top sailors in the Scorpion class, now sailing a Merlin and who both trained with the club’s youth section.

Laser sailor Mike Pridham maintained a narrow lead on handicap, ahead of Dave Guthrie in a Phantom and Guy Woodhouse in a K1. There were 13 finishers.

Races 9 and 10 of the Sunday COVID Series were sailed on September 6 in milder conditions with a steady south-westerly breeze. A total of 14 dinghies completed both races, with Allan and Chrissy Tyler (Fireball) and Simon Heusen (Phantom) each placed first or second. Mike Pridham maintained third in both to stay ahead in the series three points clear of Simon.

Racing was followed by the first socialising at the club, both the bar and catering being opened to members under COVID secure conditions. Commodore Jeremy Wallace welcomed staff and members to cheers and applause.

Sundays will now continue to see lunches served, with bookings being taken in advance.

Racing continues as present until the end of the month when cruisers will begin and a change to a winter programme will be planned.
