By Richard Jackman

LYME Regis Golf Club seniors were thrust straight into the fire as the first main competion of the year was the Marsh Tankard – a medal!

Practise during the wet times paid off handsomely for Stephen Pitt as he played some ever- improving golf during the round to finish with a nett 67, which included birdies on the 13th and tricky 16th holes.

David Binns started well but could not keep up the pressure, but he still finished with a very impressive two under gross 69. David Chambers continued his improvement with a polished 70, just ahead of Alan Watson on countback.

The weekend individual stableford produced some good scores, none better than Colin Beauchamp who started and finished with some superb high-scoring holes with the best score of the day – 39 points, to win Division 1. A vintage performance from Roger Seed, including three  birdies enabled him to make a comfortable second place with 38 points from a steady 36 points for David Riches in third.

Division 2 saw lower scores but the competion was fierce, as after a disappointing start, Richard Emm got himself into gear to record 35 points, giving him a two-point cushion over Jon Cullimore and Mark Thirlwell, who both tied on 33, but a better back nine saw Cullimore take silver.

The ladies endured a tough day of medal competition as the winners of both silver and bronze divisions scored a hard fought nett 73, four better than par. The silver division winner was Diane Harris whose brilliant first nine laid the foundation for a well-deserved win. Not to be outdone, for the second week running, ladies’ captain Susan Moore bettered her handicap as she came in second with a nett 75 with Anne Humphreys taking third on 81.

In the bronze division Sarah Kilcoyne continued her steady improvement to appear on the podium again, this time in first place,  with a steady round of four under nett par while Ros Clemmans improved on the back nine to take second on 77. Judith Ellard was third with a good nett 78.
