LAST week’s high winds meant Lyme Regis Sailing Club’s youth group could not go out to sea, so they took part in a theory lesson on dry land instead.
Instructors Jim Thomas and Simon Law talking the young sailors through rigging, points of sailing, the five essentials, tacking and gybing on shore and they then practised the basic knots which all sailors use.
Social distancing was observed with lessons taught in groups of six or less.
Mr Thomas said: “We always need to reinforce the basics so they become second nature. When you’re on the water, it’s a different world.
“Our young students have to be able to rig and sail independently having assessed the conditions before they can go on to race or leisure sail. Single handers are ideal for gaining confidence.
“We hope to fit in a few more sessions this season if the weather allows. They’re a great group!’
