CARER Support Dorset attended both the Sir John Colfox Academy in Bridport and the Woodroffe School in Lyme Regis on Thursday to help promote Young Carer Awareness Day 2020.

According to Carers Trust, which organises the awareness day, recent research has estimated that one in five secondary school pupils may be classed as young carers.

Often children can be caring for relative or a friend who has an illness, disability or addiction problems and they may help with cooking, cleaning, collecting prescriptions or getting someone dressed.

Young Carer Awareness Day raises awareness of some of the challenges that young carers face in their day-to-day lives.

Anna Elston, Manager of Carer Support Dorset, said: “Caring for someone can be very isolating, worrying and stressful. For young carers, this can negatively impact on their experiences and outcomes in education, having a lasting effect on their future prospects.

“It has been fabulous to be able to demonstrate the importance of young carers getting the support they need whilst attending these schools. We look forward to working with other schools and education providers across Dorset over the coming months.”

Edel Kearney, head of sixth form at the Woodroffe School, commented: “We had a very informative session delivered on Young Carers Awareness Day to our sixth form students by Anna Elston, Carer Support Dorset. We have been provided with lots of new information for young people about what a caring role entails and how to access information.”
