UPLYME & Lyme Regis Horticultural Society’s annual Summer Show is the latest event to be cancelled due to the coronavirus epidemic.
The show, which celebrated its 90th anniversary last year, was due to take place in Uplyme on July 11.
Organisers said it is with regret they have taken the decision to cancel this event, as well as their spring plant sale which was scheduled for May 16.
Other major local events to be cancelled or postponed include Lyme Regis Fossil Festival, now to be held in October, Jazz Jurassica, Uplyme Fete, the VE Day anniversary commemorations and the Easter Bonnet Parade – although a virtual version of this will be going ahead.
Summer Show exhibitors will be contacted by the organisers and winners of trophies at last year’s show may keep them until May 31 2021.
A spokesperson said: “We shall be using the theme of lavender and this year’s schedule of classes for next year’s show, so on the plus side there will be plenty of time to plan and prepare entries.”
Society members who have purchased tubers for the Potato in a Bucket competition are urged to keep their potatoes fed and watered. It is hoped that the society will be able to run this competition in some form during the summer.
Expanded Autumn Show
Due to the cancellation, the society is now hoping to expand its annual Autumn Show to be held later in the year.
A spokesperson added: “As many people will be spending more time in their gardens this summer, we hope there may be some excellent exhibits ready for showing in the autumn. Further details will be published later in the summer.”
The society’s programme of talks and trips will recommence as soon as Uplyme Village Hall re-opens and gardens are open again to visit. The committee will get in touch with members when dates are available.
Any trips or talks that have had to be cancelled will be rebooked, and if anyone has paid for trips beyond April, the organisers will contact them.
