WEST Dorset MP Chris Loder has personally thanked Lyme Regis residents who volunteered to help others during the coronavirus pandemic.
Mr Loder sent each volunteer from the Lyme Regis Community Support group a box of House of Commons after dinner mints and a personal letter.
The community support group has seen volunteers looking after vulnerable neighbours by doing their weekly grocery shop and other essential tasks, picking up prescriptions or simply phoning to check up on others.
The letter from Mr Loder read: “It has not gone unnoticed, the incredible work that Lyme Regis volunteers have been doing for the local community throughout the coronavirus crisis.
“The town council and the Lyme Regis Community Support team have been truly excellent in what they have achieved, and I know there are many others who played a significant part.
“How you have grown from a small idea to a crucial lifeline is testimony to the hard work and dedication that has gone into this, along with in inspirational level of community spirit.
“Recently, I have been asking constituents for names of their local heroes who have gone the extra mile during the crisis – and so often individual volunteers have been mentioned and you should all be very proud.”
Mr Loder has also been fighting Lyme Regis’ corner in the House of Commons, speaking publicly about the financial difficulties town councils across the country were dealing with due to the coronavirus pandemic.
He said that Lyme Regis Town Council needed additional support, adding: “With a population of just under 3,800, this jumps to 20,000 in a normal summer season. Lyme Regis Town Council provides extensive amenities for holidaymakers and income coming from commercial and tourism activity is absolutely vital.”
The town council is currently considering measures it can take to improve its current financial outlook, which is expected to see reserves drop by more than £900,000 over the next year.
