Third Lyme Splash swim a sell-out

Swimmers head off on last year's Lyme Regis to Charmouth swim, organised by Lyme Splash

PLACES in the third annual Lyme Regis to Charmouth swimming challenge, organised by Lyme Splash, sold out in less than a month.

The open water sea swim will take place on Sunday, September 2 when swimmers will set off to swim 3.15k or 1.7 nautical miles from Lyme Regis to Charmouth, waved off by supporters and the mayor.

Karen Durham-Diggins, chairman of Lyme Splash, which aims to promote water sports in the Lyme Regis area, said: “We were amazed at how quickly the swim sold out even though we increased the amount of swimmers to 200 – it certainly seems Lyme Splash is firmly in the open water swimming communities diary!

“We’re attracting a healthy and interesting range of swimmers of all ages that includes Channel swimmers, open water swimming groups, schools, clubs as well as individuals.

“Last year, Lyme Splash raised £1,000 through swimmers’ entry fees, sponsorship and a raffle, split between four charities: B Sharp, the Marine Theatre, Two Minute Beach Clean and WaterAid. We also had a number of people swim for their own chosen charity.

“This year we’ll be raising money for our chosen charities and four people will be swimming for Dorset’s Diverse Abilities Charity. Of course, we always want to raise more.

“This will be helped by the tremendous response from local businesses for the raffle prizes and our sponsors. Lyme Regis’s Boat Building Academy has generously given as the first raffle prize – a five-day woodworking course worth £625!”

Yvonne Green, principal of the Boat Building Academy, commented: “Lyme Splash is a splendid idea. We’re delighted to make a contribution by offering another supporter of Lyme Splash the opportunity to learn something new by the sea.”

River Cottage HQ, The Harbour Inn, Chococo, Herbie’s Dino Bar, The Fisherman’s Wife, Lyme Rib Rides, Lyme Regis Kayak Hire and the Marine Aquarium have also all stepped forward with some great raffle prizes too.

Tickets cost only £1 and can be bought online at www.lyme-splash.com/swim-raffle/or from the Lyme Splash crew at the event.

Once again, on completing the swim, swimmers will be warmed up with a delicious cup of 70 per cent origin hot chocolate from Dorset chocolatiers Chococo and Moores Biscuits before being whizzed back to Lyme Regis by Lyme Rib Rides.

Sponsorship from Lyme Bay Holidays has also helped support the behind scenes infrastructure and the organisation’s new website at http://www.lyme-splash.com
