A WOMAN featured in a photo taken in 1938, which has appeared in press coverage of the so-called ‘Ice Cream Wars’ in Lyme Regis, has come forward to recreate the image 82 years later.

Amid controversy surrounding tricycle trader Marie Amesbury selling ice creams on Lyme Regis seafront under a pedlar’s license, despite objections from permanent traders and the town council, a photo appeared of a four-year-old girl buying an ice cream from a similar mobile ice cream seller in 1938.

Mrs Amesbury said the old photo proved her mobile business was part of “quintessential British seaside history”.

Now the little girl featured in the photo – Joan Bird, now aged 85 – has come forward and recreated the image, originally taken by her father Percy all those years ago.

Said Joan: “Dad was a very keen photographer, he used to tell me where to stand and took many pictures. I don’t remember dad taking the ice cream picture but I remember the ice cream seller who was Ted Welsh.

“The ice cream available all those years ago was as good as it is today.

“There were no seagull attacks in those days because all the gulls were feeding at the municipal rubbish dump.”

Joan was keen to pose for a replica photograph on Lyme Regis seafront with Mrs Amesbury, who made national headlines last week after reporting at a town council meeting that she had been “harassed, stalked, threatened and spat at” because of her business. Despite concerns from permanent traders, Mrs Amesbury insists she is acting legally.
