A LOCAL catering company is keeping NHS staff and other frontline workers well fed during the coronavirus pandemic.

The team behind Fossil Food Catering – led by Lyme Regis chef Steven Batey and his partner Kirsty Roberts – have been delivering free, hot meals to key workers every Thursday for the past three weeks.

Steve commented: “Since the virus outbreak we wanted to do something to help to others. We had a fully booked wedding season go upside down in the blink of an eye so we had the gift of time and wanted to use it wisely to help those who are putting themselves in harms way for others.

“We turned to our skill set – food. We love how food brings people together so we set up our NHS and Front Line Worker delivery meal scheme. We are not taking payment – this is just a big thank you from us for all their heroic hard work!

“We hope this gives these people some time with their loved ones to enjoy a hearty meal together.”

Steve and Kirsty, who run the successful catering company from a farm at Trinity Hill, launched a crowdfunding campaign to help cover the cost of the meals, and have already raised more than £850 of their £1,000 target.

Among those to have offered their support to the appeal are Lyme Regis lifeboat crew, which donated £100, and Steve’s team mates from Lyme Regis Football Club, who donated £150 from their ‘fines’ fund, which is usually spent on an end of season trip.

Members of both organisations have also been out helping the team deliver the meals, with more than 140 deliveries made this week.

Steve commented: “It seems we are not alone in wanting to say our thanks with many members of the local community donating to our JustGiving page and many volunteers from Lyme Regis lifeboat crew and Lyme Regis Football Club helping us with deliveries.

“Even one of our main suppliers James Hayden from RT Parris LTD has donated a huge delivery of dairy produce to use within our meals.

“Everyone’s kindness and generosity is really appreciated! We can’t thank them all enough!”
