Bank closure a ‘logistical nightmare’ for council

Valuable civic regalia such as the town maces will have to be moved to a new bank

THE closure of NatWest in Axminster could cause a “logistical nightmare” for Lyme Regis Town Council.

The town council moved its valuable items, such as the ceremonial maces, to Axminster after all banks in Lyme Regis closed last year. But it has now been announced that the Axminster branch is also due for closure in May.

The council had hoped its valuable items could be moved to the Bridport branch after the closure, as several staff members live there and would easily be able to pick them up on their way to or from work.

However, town clerk John Wright reported that the items would likely have to move to Honiton instead, which he said “will be painful for us”.

This would require making special trips back and forth to Honiton to collect the items for events such as civic parades.

“Logistically it’s a bit of a nightmare,” said Mr Wright.
