LYME Regis Christmas lights display has been switched on a week ahead of schedule to bring some festive joy to the town.

The sparkling display – with more lights than ever before – was switched on yesterday with Broad Street, Silver Street, Bridge Street and the Cobb area glittering an an all-white theme.

The annual switch-on event and Christmas lantern parade, which usually attracts huge crowds, was called off this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The main lights were switched on yesterday morning with no ceremony, but a small, socially-distanced event was held in the late afternoon to switch on the 30-foot Christmas tree donated by Penn Farm.

Local fundraiser Joshua Denning was given the honours of lighting the tree, having helped raise £2,000 towards the display by selling raffle tickets in recent weeks.

The event was also attended by the Mayor of Lyme Regis, Cllr Brian Larcombe MBE, mayoress Wendy Larcombe, town crier Alan Vian and members of the Lyme Regis Christmas Lights Committee.

The mayor said the stunning display proved that Lyme “will not be beaten by the virus”.
