PLANS have been submitted for an industrial-style building on Monmouth Beach car park in Lyme Regis, to provide storage for the harbourmaster and local fishermen.
Harbourmaster James Radcliffe, who is employed by Dorset Council, has submitted the plans for a building measuring 19 metres wide by 5.4 metres tall, sited between the public toilets and traders’ car parking area at Monmouth Beach, just off Ozone Terrace.
The building will be split into two separate areas, including a garage and store for the harbourmaster, and storage area and toilet for fishermen. The walls will be boarded with “appropriate fire retardant materials” and the roof will be either slated or covered with corrugated metal, depending on the planning officer’s recommendations.
There will be three metal roller doors on the building, as well as pedestrian access to the fishermen’s store at the north side.
The application describes the proposal as a “much-needed facility” for use with the harbour and commercial fishing related activities.
It adds: “In addition to the practical benefits given the location of the store adjacent to the Cobb and harbour, the facility would provide secure storage for harbour related activities, particularly for local fishermen given the existing facilities are inadequate to meet existing needs.
“Furthermore, the harbourmaster’s store and office are also inadequate to meet current and future needs to store equipment and vehicles.
“The harbour is a valuable facility catering for local and visiting yachts on an overnight passage, together with the growing fleet of 20 fishing vessels plus visiting craft from other local harbours. In brief, the harbour has become a major local economic driver an additional accommodation is required to support this viable commercial asset.”
Th town council will be consulted on the application and a decision will be made by Dorset Council.
