THE nurses at the Fortuneswell Cancer Unit at Dorset County Hospital have thanked the people of Lyme Regis and wished them a happy New Year after they helped to raise more than £20,0000 for the unit.

The donation – made by Lyme Regis Golf Club following a year of fundraising events led by captain Lee Caddy and his partner Lynnette Ravenscroft – was one of the biggest ever received by the unit.

Mr Caddy said: “The donation truly reflects the on-going support received from the wonderful people of Lyme Regis. The nursing staff want Lyme Regis to know they are overwhelmed by their generosity.

“The money will be used in the New Year to send three nurses on advanced training courses and to help with the refurbishment of the chemotherapy unit at the hospital.”

Lee and Lynnette said the donation would not have been possible without the kindness of their family, friends and club members and the amazing support of the local people and businesses in Lyme Regis.

In particular, they thanked they independent shops and restaurants, with a special mention for The Harbour Inn, HIX Oyster Fish House and The Alexandra Hotel.

Mr Caddy added: “Every business that was approached were happy to support The Fortuneswell Unit and without exception everyone wanted to show their appreciation for the nurses, doctors and staff at the cancer unit and wanted to support them in their continuing care for people with cancer in Lyme Regis. This small seaside town definitely has a very big heart.”

Lynnette was invited to visit the nursing staff to accept their thanks just before Christmas, and brought supporter Cliff Powley, dressed as Santa Claus, along with her.

While visiting the unit, Father Christmas took the time to visit some of the younger patients on the children’s ward.
