New facilities at Marine Theatre

THE Marine Theatre in Lyme Regis celebrated the launch of its new quarterly programme at a party for trustees, volunteers and Theatre Friends, a membership group for supporters of the arts venue.

The event also marked the opening of the theatre’s new disabled toilet, by regular audience member Katie Duncan.

Previously, wheelchair-users would have to leave the building to use facilities. Volunteers raised money over many years, and the Garnett Foundation also provided a grant to provide the new toilet.

Theatre manager Sophia Moseley said: “We are working hard to put the Marine at the heart of the community. The opening of these facilities is aligned with that.

“It’s vital that everyone can enjoy the theatre as a cultural asset to the town. Thank you to all who have raised money.”

Town councillors Jeff Scowen, Stan Williams, and deputy mayor Steve Miller joined supporters for a celebratory drink in the sunshine.

Councillor Scowen said: “It’s great to be here at the Marine and see these new facilities open. It’s positive to see the hard work of fundraisers, making all the events here accessible to as many local people as possible.”

The quarterly programme for the summer includes events with DJ Yoda, Talon, and Dr Feelgood all featured.

Theatre director Gabby Rabbitts welcomed Theatre Friends to the party and commented: “There’s something for everyone this summer. We have good value events such as the discos. The Sunday Sessions is free.

“Sometimes we are bringing in bigger names to the town, which attracts people from other areas – that’s great for local businesses. Screenings like Glyndebourne are a good way for people to access culture at a low price.”

The new programme is available from the theatre, or can be downloaded at
