New cocktail bar to open in popular Lyme café

A NEW bar will make use of the space in a popular Lyme Regis café during the evenings.

The brainchild of experienced barmen and mixologists David Smith and Lloyd Brown, The Dark Bear will open at the Aroma Café & Kitchen in Bridge Street on Friday, June 1.

The pair have been discussing the idea for six years but finally decided to work together, combining David’s business Dark Arts Distillery with Lloyd’s Grey Bear Bar Company to create The Dark Bear.

They have already seen great success opening in the evenings at Aroma’s Bridport branch, and will now also be in Lyme every Wednesday to Saturday night, from 6pm to 11pm on weekdays and 6pm to 12midnight on Saturdays.

David and Lloyd launch their new project with a wealth of experience under their belts. David previously worked at the famous HIX Oyster & Fish House in Lyme Regis and multi-award winning Achor Inn in Seatown, and Lloyd at the popular Venner Bar in The Bull Hotel, Bridport, voted the best place to drink in the South West.

They now combine their skills to offer a menu of inventive cocktails, as well as favourite classics, alongside a full bar with drinks sourced as locally as possible, plus some influences from David’s Glaswegian roots.

Wine will be supplied by Furleigh Estate, beer from Cerne Abbas Brewery and cider from Dorset Star, as well as a large whiskey selection. There will also be a variety of mocktails on the menu, all served alongside tasty nibbles and ecclectic music.

David and Lloyd said: “John, Dewi and the team at Aroma have been really accommodating and supportive, and we have had a great reaction in Bridport, especially from local residents who have always been supportive of our previous ventures.”

Following the summer season, David and Lloyd hope to host special events and tastings at The Dark Bear and make connections with local bartenders by hosting workshops.
