THE sand beach and most of Cobb Gate shingle beach in Lyme Regis is currently closed off while re-profiling work is carried out.
Large areas of the shingle beach and all of the main sandy beach have been roped off while Dorset Council re-profiles steep ridges.
The sand beach will be closed until 5pm on Friday and about 60% of the shingle beach is currently closed, with this work expected to continue tomorrow (Thursday).
However, harbour dredging work which has seen sand and water pumped across the sand and into the sea is expected to finish today.
The work re-profiling has coincided with one of the hottest weeks of the year, and many beach-goers have already packed into the small area that currently remains open.
Councillor Ray Bryan, portfolio holder for Highways, Travel & Environment at Dorset Council said: “Lyme Regis harbour has been dredged over the last couple of weeks and the dredge material is being used to replenish the beach. This will provide additional coastal protection and replaces the sand that slowly erodes from the beach over time.
“The activity will be finished by Friday evening and we thank local residents and businesses for their patience and understanding while this essential work is carried out.”
