Council committee meetings to restart in New Year

LYME Regis Town Council will restart regular committee meetings in the New Year.

When lockdown measures were first implemented in March, the council suspended all scheduled meetings and then started holding virtual extraordinary full council meetings every month via video conferencing app Zoom.

With the exception of the Planning Committee – which has to recommend approval or refusal of local planning applications to Dorset Council – the council’s individual committees have not met since March.

This includes committees on Strategy & Finance, Human Resources, Town Management and Tourism, Community & Publicity.

Prior to lockdown, the bulk of discussion on everyday matters and council projects took place at committee meetings, with full council being used to give final approval to the recommendations put forward.

Speaking at la recent virtual meeting, several councillors called for committee meetings to be restarted.

Councillor John Broom said he did not understand why these could not also be held via Zoom, and added that other councils had already restarted all of their usual meetings.

Councillor Michaela Ellis also expressed concern that there were many matters that needed to be discussed by committees.

It was agreed that virtual committee meetings would be restarted via Zoom after Christmas, with the monthly extraordinary meetings of the full council continuing up until then.

Although the committees have not been meeting, it was recently agreed that current chairmen would remain in post until the end of the council year in May without formal re-elected.

This means the Mayor of Lyme Regis, Councillor Brian Larcombe MBE, will remain chairman of both Strategy & Finance and Human Resources; Cllr Broom will continue as chairman of Town Management; Cllr Graham Turner will lead the Planning Committee; and the council’s youngest member, Cllr Kelsey Ellis, will continue as chairman of Tourism, Community & Publicity.
