THE recently-launched community radio station, Lyme Bay Radio, is helping to spread joy across the local area as residents cope with the coronavirus epidemic.

The radio station – set up by Lyme Regis Development Trust and completely volunteer-led – had only been in operation for two weeks before it had to cease all studio activity due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Volunteer presenters are still managing to produce some shows remotely, including a daily show from station manager Simon West called ‘Viva Lyme Bay’, offering updates on the coronavirus situation and how it is affecting the local area. Music also continues to play 24/7.

Now, in a bid to spread some joy and keep us active, the station is hoping to get Lyme Bay residents dancing.

Presenters Sue Wheeler and Mark Oborn will host ‘Virtual Dance Freestyle’ on Saturday, March 23 from 9pm to 11pm, featuring modern music, salsa, west coast swing and jive.

Sue said: “Many thousands of people regularly attend dance classes across the South West; classes and weekend freestyles run at Chideock, Bridport, Dorchester, Weymouth and Axminster. Obviously the virus has stopped all dances.

“The idea of the virtual freestyle is to keep the dance community dancing and socially connected by using Facebook and social media (use #LBRDance). We also hope it will lift people’s spirits and increase their exercise, promote our local community radio station which is currently on lockdown to all presenters and guests, and support local small businesses who rely on repeat customers to survive.

“People taking part don’t have to be formal dancers as it’s a playlist anyone can dance to. Potentially anyone with an internet connection can join in!”
