Lyme Regis looks forward to return of Regatta & Carnival Week

A WEEK of fun events and entertainment is lined up when Lyme Regis Regatta and Carnival Week bursts into life this weekend.

The annual extravaganza starts on Saturday, August 7 with the Tano Taiko Drummers playing in the Marine Parade Shelters at 7pm before the torchlight procession through the seafront gardens at 9pm.

There are more than 60 events programmed during the week, with some of the highlights including a family dog show, egg catching, beach sports, the moving ‘Candles Down the River’, where you can sponsor a candle in memory of a loved one, plus a duck race, pavement art competitions, beach treasure hunts, a teddy bears’ picnic, as well as live music in the Marine Parade shelters.

Organisers are looking forward to entertaining children and families again after the pandemic meant the event could not go ahead last summer.

Town crier Alan Vian, who is chairman of the Regatta and Carnival Committee, said: “We’ve got some great events planned are we are looking forward to seeing the many families who come each year to Lyme as well as making new friends.”

Carnival organiser Rob James added: “We are hoping as many people come along and support carnival week events as all proceeds will go to local good causes in Lyme Regis.

“We are extremely grateful to our primary sponsors Lyme Bay Holidays and all the other wonderful local businesses who are supporting us.”

The week culminates with a beach party with DJs on the sand on Friday, August 13 and the grand carnival procession on Saturday 14, which will make its way from Holmbush car park down Pound Street, Broad Street and along the seafront from 8pm.

Lyme’s Regatta & Carnival Committee are hoping as many participants join in this year’s procession with Mr James commenting: “We’d love to see as many entries as possible in this year’s procession. We want it to be a fun community event showcasing the best of Lyme Regis.

“So, whether you are thinking of entering your children, entering as an individual, family, group of friends, local organisation or business, please get involved.

“There is no theme so you can be as creative as you want. You can message us via social media or email to let us know you’re planning to enter, or you can just turn up by 7pm in Holmbush car park on Saturday 14.”
