IT wasn’t quite the celebration Seb Cope had in mind when he announced his 35th birthday to volunteer colleagues at Lyme Regis lifeboat station.
As he stepped ashore after a training session on Tuesday night, his ‘friends’ pounced out of the shadows, tied him to the harbour railings and served him a generous portion of eggs, baked beans and flour. And the second course was a hosing down in very cold water – a birthday tradition for the lifeboat crew.
One crew member said: “Perhaps Seb should have kept quiet about his birthday because this sort of treat is a Lyme Regis tradition.”
And Seb’s reaction: “It was a good laugh once I had got over the shock and removed baked beans from my ears.”
