Kite surfer injured after dragged along beach in heavy winds

EMERGENCY services were called to Lyme Regis beach on Friday afternoon when a kite surfer was caught by a heavy gust of wind and dragged along the shingle.

The surfer was said to have been thrown up several feet in the air and then dragged along Cobb Gate shingle beach after being caught by the wind before he entered the water.

The surfer’s parachute-style kite then became tangled on the roofs of houses on Marine Parade.

Several water sports enthusiasts had been making the most of the gusty conditions when the incident unfolded at about 5pm on October 29.

Coastguards and the ambulance service were called the the scene, along with Devon Air Ambulance who airlifted the man to hospital.

Lyme Regis fire crew were also called to release the kite sail from the roofs.
