Harbour dredging and beach re-profiling to clash with Easter holiday

ANNUAL harbour dredging and beach re-profiling work in both Lyme Regis and West Bay will be held over the fortnight commencing April 6 – clashing with the Easter holidays and outside opening of bars and restaurants.

The Easter holidays in Dorset and Somerset will run from April 2 to 16 and local restaurants will be opening outside areas from April 12.

Self-contained holiday accommodation can also reopen from April 12.

Sections of the main sandy beach and Cobb Gate shingle beach are likely to be closed during this period, while Dorset Council carries out the essential works, which will see the shingle and sand beaches levelled out again.

The work is carried out annually to maintain flood defences provided by beaches, in addition to maintaining the navigable channel on the approaches to Lyme Regis harbour.

The decision when to carry out the work is said to be dependent on the tides.

Lyme Regis Town Council said the timing of the works was “not ideal” but appears to be fixed.
