THE Hub youth club in Lyme Regis has received a rave review after welcoming a Scout troop from Chipping Sodbury, in South Gloucestershire, for a walking weekend.

The troop used The Hub as their base for the weekend, during which time they enjoyed walking sections of the South West Coast Path.

Scout leader Simon Bateman later sent a glowing review of their stay at The Hub, saying the facilities on offer were the “icing on the cake” of a fantastic weekend.

He wrote: “It has become traditional for us to get away for a walking weekend at the end of January, so this year we chose the South West Coast Path as our challenge. We often stay in bunkhouses and Scout halls, rather than the usual tents or hammocks enjoyed the rest of the year round, so when an internet search brought up The Hub in Lyme Regis our mind was made up quickly.

“To have Lyme Regis as a base is fantastic, but the central location and facilities offered by The Hub were the icing on the cake for us. Sleeping for 25 was straightforward, with three or four separate areas, comfy camp beds and toasty central heating.

‘Nothing was too much trouble’

“Fish and chips from Lyme’s Fish Bar welcomed us on Friday evening, which Diane [manager of The Hub] kindly pre-ordered for us. In fact nothing was too much trouble for Diane, the booking was really straightforward and efficient, we were met on arrival and shown every one of the extensive facilities, there really was nothing more we could have asked for.

“The Scouts are used to fending for themselves, living off a wood fire, so a fully equipped kitchen was the height of luxury for them. We enjoyed cooked breakfasts both mornings and a curry feast on the Saturday evening. There were more than enough chairs and tables to go round and even a lift to bring the food up from the kitchen.

“We have a strict ‘no phones or electronics’ policy for the Scouts, which meant we were able to subject them to the playlists on our phones, which we could connect to one of the sound systems at The Hub. There are a number of televisions and sporting activities, depending on your requirements, but after a long day on the trail our troop were more than happy to opt for dinner then bed.

“There are more than enough toilets and showers in the building and it is clear that building is well cared for. All of the equipment is new, in good repair and the whole fabric of the building is evidently thoroughly cleaned and well looked after. It’s obvious that a lot of work goes into keeping this place in great shape.

‘Best place we have ever hired’

“We had a superb weekend and only scratched the surface of the range of activities on offer in the area. Having stayed at many places over the years, I must say that this is the best place we have ever hired and I would recommend it to any Scout, Guide or youth group, of any age or size. Just make sure you leave some weekends free for us to come back!

“Thank you Diane, for your kind and thoughtful attention; before, during and after our stay. We are all looking forward to a return visit in the not too distant future.”
