THE nation was saddened yesterday (Sunday) to hear of the death of ‘Only Fools and Horses’ actor John Challis – a firm friend of Lyme Regis.

John played the legendary character Boycie in Britain’s favourite sitcom.

In recent years, John had made several appearances at the Marine Theatre in Lyme Regis with his one-man show and to sign books.

He also opened Lyme Regis Lifeboat Week in July 2019 and was a keen supporter of the RNLI.

During his visit to the town, he even popped into the Nag’s Head Inn – namesake of his favourite haunt in ‘Only Fools and Horses’ – where he met then landlords James and Rebecca DeVoisey and posed for photographs.

It was reported yesterday that he died peacefully in his sleep, aged 79, after a long battle with cancer.
