Plans for Charmouth nature reserve

char mouth parish councilEXCITING plans to create a nature reserve on the outskirts of Charmouth were revealed at the annual parish meeting last night (Tuesday).

The well attended meeting listened intently to Rob Powell, owner of Hogchester Farm,  which sits in Char Valley parish. Six acres are being made available for the community project.

Mr Powell said he was not intending to farm the field, which was next to the village cemetery, in the traditional fashion but was hoping to make the land available for a market garden where organic vegetables could be grown and a community orchard from which they could possibly brew their own cider.

Mr Powell said it would be a “not for profit” project and he was looking for ideas from those who would like to get involved.

“This is an opportunity to get back to the land and be closer to our local food story,” he said.

Parish council chairman Peter Noel welcomed the initiative, saying: “This is a very giving community and I think you will be over-subscribed with people wanting to help.”

All those interested in the project should contact Mr Powell by visitings the website www.hogchester.com
