Family to raise charity funds with marathon along Jurassic Coast

A FAMILY of regular visitors to Charmouth will be completing a marathon distance along the Jurassic Coast this summer to raise funds for a charity close to their hearts.

Holly Broughton, from Prestwood in Buckinghamshire, has recruited family and friends to take part in a 10k mud run in July, as well as a marathon distance of 26.2 miles from Weymouth to Charmouth beach in August.

The group will be raising money for Thomas’ Fund, a charity set up in memory of Holly’s cousin Thomas, who died from cancer in 2015 aged just four years old.

Holly commented: “We will endeavour to complete the 26.2 miles along the undulating cliffs, whether walking, running or crawling. This, of course, includes that very steep, long climb up and back down Golden Cap!

“We have had a long association with Charmouth; my parents, grandparents, aunty, uncle, cousins and even great grandfather have spent many happy times here, and is where I have met life long friends. As it is such a special place to us, it seems fitting to set our challenge here.

“Thomas was a lively, happy little boy who enjoyed bikes, swimming and going to the beach. However, at just 18 months old he was diagnosed with a tumour in his brain and spinal cord.

“He had 77 doses of chemotherapy and 18 anaesthetics which left him with devastating side effects. The diagnosis of this type of tumour is notoriously difficult and due to its rarity there has been very little research, with there still being no effective treatments.

“Thomas’ tissue is the first of its type to be banked, so we hope to help fund more research and help current treatments to have fewer awful side effects.

“He was inseparable from Geoffrey the Giraffe and is remembered for his gorgeous hair, which luckily didn’t fall out, his big blue eyes, and his amazing stubbornness in the face of such adversity.”

Holly and her family have already raised £450 of their £1,000 target. To sponsor them, visit
