Oscar Wilde season continues in Lyme Regis

A NEW production of one of the wittiest plays in English will be broadcast live to the Marine Theatre in Lyme Regis from the Vaudeville Theatre in London’s West End this October.

‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ is the next in a season of Oscar Wilde events, continuing later on in the month with a showing of ‘The Happy Prince’.

Starring and directed by Rupert Everett, the film tells the previously untold story of the last days in the tragic times of Oscar Wilde. He observes his own failure with ironic distance and regards the difficulties that beset his life with detachment and humour.

‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ throws love, logic and language into the air to make one of theatre’s most dazzling comic climaxes. Characters Jack, Algy, Gwendolyn and Cecily discover how unsmooth runs the course of true love, while Lady Bracknell keeps a baleful eye on the mayhem of manners.

Michael Fentiman’s ‘absolutely hilarious’ (★★★★★ WhatsOnStage) adaptation stars Olivier Award winner Sophie Thompson (Four Weddings and a Funeral) and Jeremy Swift (Downton Abbey).

This is another ‘magnificent’ (★★★★ Sunday Times) instalment of Classic Spring’s critically acclaimed Oscar Wilde Season, a year-long celebration of the brilliant Victorian playwright.

Theatre manager Sophia Moseley said: “Oscar Wilde was a lover of the modern in all its forms, and I͛’m sure the idea that his plays could now be broadcast live to the Marine Theatre would have delighted him.

“We are very pleased that these glorious plays are going to reach an even wider audience and have life beyond their runs in the West End.”

‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ will be screened on Tuesday, October 9. Tickets cost £12 in advance or £14.50 on the door, with a 10% discount for Theatre Friends.

‘The Happy Prince’ will be held on Thursday, October 18. Tickets cost £5 in advance or £6.50 on the door, also with a 10% discount for Theatre Friends.
