Marine to host live screenings of new season from The Met Operas

FOLLOWING the successful introduction earlier this year of live screenings, the Marine Theatre in Lyme Regis has announced that it is broadcasting the new season of The Met Operas, live in HD at a special price of £10 for under 18s and £15 for adults.

The series launches on Saturday, October 6 with the first of ten transmissions, including four new productions: Saint-Saëns’s ‘Samson et Dalila’ (October 20); Nico Muhly’s ‘Marnie’ (November 10); Verdi’s ‘LaTraviata’ (December 17); and Cilea’s ‘Adriana Lecouvreur’ (January 12).

Opening with Anna Netrebko singing her first Met Aida, alongside Anita Rachvelishvili’s Amneris and Aleksandrs Antonenko’s Radamès, this first of three live broadcasts in October is conducted by Nicola Luisotti.

Two weeks later, Darko Tresnjak’s new production of Saint-Saëns’ ‘Samson et Dalila’ is conducted by Sir Mark Elder.

The third production to be broadcast live in HD in October is the Met’s classic production of ‘Puccini’s La Fanciulla del West’.

Set in the Gold Rush of 1849, it combines the action of a great adventure with the emotional punch of Italian opera. Soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek sings the role of the gunslinging heroine, alongside Jonas Kaufmann as the outlaw who steals her heart (October 27).

Before the end of the year, there are two further productions that will be shown live in HD – Nico Muhly’s ‘Marnie’ and Verdi’s ‘La Traviata’, both new productions directed by Michael Mayer.

Conducted by Robert Spano, ‘Marnie’ features mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard in the eponymous title role of the enigmatic Marnie, which is based on the novel that also inspired Hitchcock’s celebrated thriller.

‘La Traviata’ stars Diana Damrau as Violetta, Juan Diego Flórez as her lover Alfredo, and Quinn Kelsey as Alfredo’s father, and will be conducted by the Met’s new music director, Yannick NézetSéguin.

The season will continue into 2019.
