Park and ride needs to be opened for bonfire night

park and rideLYME Regis’ firework display and bonfire has become a victim of its own success.

The car parks can’t handle the volume of vehicles and people literally park anywhere they can, in the full knowledge that they will not be booked.

Cobb Road was in total chaos with some drivers parking at the top of the path to the park to watch the display. Other traffic couldn’t get up or down the hill.

There was not a single police officer around to monitor the situation and if an emergency had occurred, neither ambulance fire engine or lifeboat crew could have descended Cobb Road to assist.

Additionally, the fumes from hundreds of vehicles – both from exhausts and ‘burning’ clutches – must have been causing a serious increase in toxic chemicals that the crowd, consisting of many children, as well as adults, will have been breathing in.

What needs to happen is for park and ride to be provided for the event from around 4pm, and for this service to be made known well in advance of the event date. It should be stated that there will be severely reduced parking in Lyme, itself.

Maybe LymeOnline can do some campaigning in this area to save spoiling what is otherwise an enjoyable event for the town and its visitors.

I’m sure you’ll be made aware from other people that the traffic situation on this night is getting worse every year.
