LETTER: Cinema rebuild – where is the common sense?

regent cinema fire
The Regent Cinema auditorium was completely destroyed by fire in March 2016 and later demolished

FURTHER to the letter from Nigel Fortnam ‘Cinema delay a disaster’ in the last issue of LymeOnline (October 2), as we understand it, it is English Heritage that is responsible for the unforgivable delay in the restoration of our beautiful cinema, which is crumbling before our very eyes.

A few weeks ago the cinema doors were wide open and we managed to have a word with the gentleman dealing with a break in at the cinema (another sad consequence of it being left to rot!).

Apparently, the owners have submitted and resubmitted plans to English Heritage, who are insisting that the cinema be restored to how it was, i.e. one screen only.

The owners are wanting to do two screens as per their other cinemas, as this makes them more financially viable than with just one screen.

It doesn’t make sense that an organisation that is meant to look after England’s Heritage could be responsible for Lyme losing its lovely Art Deco cinema.

Perhaps if someone from English Heritage reads this, maybe they could issue a statement as to why the outcome will be that the town loses its cinema for the sake of an extra screen.

Where is the common sense?
