THANKS to promotion in the local press and school newsletters, the future of the 1st Charmouth Scout Group’s Beaver colony has been secured.
Having read the group’s appeal for help, a new leader has come forward to offer their services meaning the colony will no longer have to close down at the end of July.
Assistant group Scout leader Melanie Harvey said: “Although we cannot name the person until all the necessary safeguarding checks have been undertaken, I can say that she is a parent with a child at a school in our catchment area who already has a great deal of experience in running youth groups. Prior to moving down here, she used to run a club for 7-9 year olds at a church in the Bristol area.”
“Our current Beaver leader, Karen Southcott, has supplied her with copies of all the colony’s programmes for the last four years, and our new recruit is already going through these and working on ideas for the autumn term when she takes over.”
The new leader commented: “I saw the appeals for help at a time when I was ready to take on a new challenge. I love working with young people of Beaver age and can see from the way the colony’s members tackle their current weekly activities sent out in lieu of face-to-face meetings, that they are a great bunch to work with.”
Melanie added: “Finding a new leader means the colony can start accepting new members aged 6 and 7 with immediate effect, and put younger children’s names down on a waiting list.
“In fact, the new leader’s daughter is our first new recruit, and she has already taken part in the colony’s weekly lockdown challenges.”
