Light at the end of the tunnel

Mark Hix Kitchen TableIT’S been a busy few weeks with April 12 now in sight. With outdoor-dining the only possible option until May 17, there has been a lot to plan.

Thanks to my friend Archie and his team at Black Cow Vodka, we are in the process of pitching an open-sided tent outside The Fox in Corscombe so we can take bookings for lunch and dinner from April 12.

With events currently on hold, the Black Cow Saloon tent is available to use, so we are all helping each other out at the moment to get our businesses back open as soon as possible.

We are lucky at The Fox, as we already have use of the riverbank with six-seater tables.

The Oyster & Fish House in Lyme Regis is a slightly different story.

We have had a lot of guests asking us when we will reopen at The Oyster & Fish House. I attended a council meeting last week to see if we could use a patch of grass in front of the restaurant which would enable us to reopen in April.

With social distancing still in place, it wouldn’t be possible to open with only the existing terrace for seating.

Good news! The council has been hugely supportive and allowed us to use this space for decking and covered seating until September next year, so we will update you when are able to start taking bookings.

Of course, now that we have the roadmap for coming out of lockdown, we can finally make plans for the rest of the year, which means that I can start up my Kitchen Table events again from the end of June.

I have really missed hosting these in my Charmouth home, and can’t wait to start them up again.

For those of you not familiar with my Kitchen Table, I have been hosting these for the last 13 years, cooking a four course lunch or dinner for up to eight guests around my kitchen island at home.

If you’d like to book a place or even a private event for family and friends, drop Jo a line through the website and she will get you booked in. All the event dates till the end of the year are on the website.

With the ability to meet up with friends and family again this summer, I can also finally open my doors to the Kitchen Library at The Fox which you can book as a private dining room from June 21.

The last lockdown gave me the time to get this room exactly how I wanted it – and to get my collection of 2,000 cookbooks up on the shelves.

I have just written three feast menus for you to choose from for family-style dining – Chop Feast, Game Feast and Land and Sea.

I am also looking for additional chefs and front of house staff, both full and part-time, at The Fox and Fish House, so do spread the word if you live locally. Applications can be made online or emailed through to us.

We finally have plenty to look forward to this spring, and I’m looking forward to seeing you all again next month.
