Uplyme skittled out for just 29 by league leaders

AFTER the euphoria of their previous week’s maximum points win over Bradninch, Uplyme & Lyme Regis came tumbling back to reality on Saturday when they were skittled out for just 29 runs by Sidmouth 3rd X1 with only two batsmen troubling the scorers.

Highlight or the previous week’s victory was a glorious 109 from Mark Batey,  but he was unavailable for this fixture against the Devon Cricket League E Division East leaders.

But the side did include Uplyme’s new signing Jibu Varghes, who demonstrated what an asset he will be this season by finishing top of the bowling averages with figures of 4-55 off nine overs.

Uplyme won the toss at Fortfield and elected to field and had to chase long and hard to restrict the home batsmen to 236-9 off the allotted 45 overs, their top scorer being Saju Patidar who carried his bat for 64.

Steve Batey (2-49) and Neil Price (1-37) took the other wickets for Uplyme.

Uplyme lost opening James Whetlor without run on the scoreboard, falling to the fourth ball of the first over, and then there was a steady procession of batsmen back to the pavilion as swing bowler Ed Hurley, in magnificent form, claimed eight wickets off just 6.3 overs for the loss of 19 runs. Steve Batey (6) and Mark Brimicombe (10) were the only batsmen to score with seven all recording ducks.

After this defeat, Uplyme & Lyme Regis drop to fourth place in E Division East. This coming Saturday Uplyme are at at home to Ottery St Mary 2nds.
