LYM Valley Croquet Club recently welcomed visitors for an open day as the 2018 season got underway.
Visitors tried their hand at ‘golf croquet’, simpler than association croquet, with members showing them the ropes before breaking for tea and cake.
The croquet club is based at the King George V playing field in Uplyme, with its own three-quarter size lawn and use of another two three-quarter lawns and a half-size lawn on the out field of the neighbouring cricket ground.
Members can play as a fun and social activity, mostly on Monday or Thursday afternoons, or can take part in inter-club competitions or in the South West Federation of Croquet Clubs league competitions at three different levels.
Tuition and use of the club’s equipment is included in membership, and current members are happy to welcome newcomers and help them improve their game during friendly play.
The club has members of all experiences, from beginners to advanced and is keen to welcome more. Newcomers can attend three introductory sessions before joining, and will benefit from discounted membership fees of £40 for their first year. Full membership costs £75 a year and associate membership is £40 plus £2 per session.
Visitors can also join an existing member by prior arrangement for just £2 a head.
