MANAGER of the Flamingo Pool in Axminster, Steve Buxton, was one of just 300 people selected to join record breaker Ross Edgley as he completed his swim around Great Britain.
Supporters were invited to apply for places in the ‘flotilla’ to join Ross as completed the final mile of his world record swim and Steve was among those selected to take part in the event at Margate on Sunday.
Ross left Margate 155 days earlier and has now become the first person to swim around Great Britain, not touching dry land during the 2,000 mile challenge. He had previously set records for the world’s longest staged sea swim and first person to swim the entire south coast.
Steve said: “I have followed Ross’ journey from the start and to be part of history on Sunday was a real honour and privilege. Everyone should take time to watch a couple of his vlogs as his mental attitude is inspiring – whatever mother nature and the oceans have thrown at him he has been so positive.
“It really was a privilege to have been a part of this historic achievement and if he inspires people to swim then what a legacy.
“We swam in 12 degree water at 7.45am for an hour. I swim four times a week but couldn’t comprehend how he swam for 157 days for six hours at a time.”
