Zero waste shop comes to Lyme Regis!

The Green Weigh has proved such a hit it won Dorset's New Business of the Year at the Wessex FM Local Business Awards last week

A NEW, mobile zero waste shop is proving a big hit in towns across West Dorset, with new stops in Lyme Regis and Charmouth recently added to its weekly schedule.

Following a successful crowdfunding campaign in June, which was sponsored by 11 local businesses and raised half of their startup fees, four mums from Bridport – Libby, Kate, Alex and Lora – set up The Green Weigh in August and the idea has been such a hit they won Dorset’s New Business of the Year at the Wessex FM Local Business Awards last week.

The Green Weigh has now secured permanent trading pitches in eight locations across East Devon and West Dorset, reaching towns and villages on its mission to encourage people to shop more responsibly and reduce plastic waste.

Libby said: “There has been more and more media coverage of the plastic pollution crisis, most recently BBC1’s ‘Drowning in Plastic’. The Green Weigh’s mission is to provide an alternative to those who want to reduce their plastic impact and buy food free from packaging, whilst reaching communities who may be isolated.

“As mums on tight budgets with young children, family life does not allow for big expenditures on food. We feel that plastic free shopping must be accessible to everyone, on any budget, so that as a whole society we can begin to address the plastic crisis.”

Customers can use any container for their purchases, such as Tupperware, glass or cloth bags to stop filling their cupboards with unnecessary plastic packaging. Simply weigh the container, fill with products, weigh again and pay.

Lora commented: “A lot of our customers reminisce that this was how they and their mothers used to shop! They are sometimes surprised at the big range of products we stock and I think more and more people are looking for plastic-free alternatives.”

The Green Weigh will be making weekly stops at the Stonebarrow lay-by in Charmouth every Monday from 9.30am to 12noon, followed by Lyme Regis Football Club from 12.30pm to 3pm.

It will also be making weekly stops in Bridport, Burton Bradstock, Bradpole, Netherbury, Dorchester and Axminster.
