Support floods in for water polo championship

LYME Splash has been awarded a grant from the town council for a set of goals for its newly-formed Lyme Regis team and its annual Water Polo Sea Championship, to be held over the weekend of August 3 and 4.

Local ice cream company Baboo Gelato has also confirmed its support for the event, and will be generously sponsoring the championship for the third year running.

Annie Hanbury, founder of Baboo Gelato, commented: “We’re so pleased to be supporting a local success story that’s growing year on year. To help bring together the community to take part in a heritage sport and show off Lyme Regis is certainly something to be proud of.”

Wyvern Water Polo has also signed up to sponsor part of the Lyme Splash Water Polo Sea Championship barbecue evening for players, supporters and volunteers and will be providing three great raffle prizes exclusively for the event.

The new Lyme Regis water polo team will hold its first training practice at the swimming pool at Highlands End Holiday Park in Eype, near Bridport on Tuersday, April 23 at 7.15pm.

Team leader Lucy Watkinson said:  “There’s already been a lot of interest but now we have our first practice session booked we need those keen, and curious, to be part of the team to step up, sign up and turn up!

“The Lyme Regis Water Polo team will use the pool every other week until the sea warms up and then we’ll be practicing in the harbour – alternate weeks we’ll train on the beach.

“We have time to really get some great teams going, so come along on April 23 and see how you can be part of it!”

The new team actively encourages people new to the sport and is open to anyone over 16 years old, both men and women.

The first session costs just £5 and will start with activities to get to know each other activity and the game, where technique and tactical tips will be explained together with a question and answer session, and will be followed by a pool session with two coaches from Bridport Barracudas Water Polo Team.

Karen Durham-Diggins, chairman of Lyme Splash, which encourages water sports in the Lyme Bay area, commented: “What an amazing month! We started so modesty three years ago with just a commitment to get water polo back into Lyme Regis. Now we have the only water polo championship in the UK, our own goals and the formation of a team, none of which could have happened without all the support and kindness we’ve received.” Said
