SNOWFALL in Lyme Regis has closed schools and businesses for the second time this year.

The Woodroffe School in Lyme Regis, as well as all three primary schools in the area – St Michael’s, Mrs Ethelston’s and Charmouth – have been closed today following snowfall yesterday (Sunday) and overnight.

Some businesses opened late this morning as staff struggled to get to work on time and the town council offices will be closed all day.

It is the second time that snow has affected schools and businesses in Lyme Regis this year, with several closing for two days two weeks ago when ‘The Beast from the East’ hit the South West.

A severe weather alert for ice was in place across the county this morning, with Dorset County Council warning that “treated routes could be slippery and those not gritted could be treacherous”.

However, as temperatures have risen throughout the day, most roads around Lyme Regis are now easily passable and most shops are open.

Local bus services were suspended earlier today due to the weather. The X53 First service is now operating in full and the X51 its operating between Axminster and Bridport only. The Stagecoach service 9 was expected to start operation at 12noon but only between Exeter and Seaton, not Lyme Regis. The 71 Lyme Regis town service bus will not be stopping at Somers Fields today.
