Lifeboat volunteers honoured for long service at Christmas dinner

Thirty years a volunteer, postman Andrew Rice, is honoured by lifeboat operations manager Nick Marks

MEMBERS of Lyme Regis lifeboat crew, their families and friends welcomed Christmas on Saturday, December 8 at their annual dinner and presentation night.

Sixty guests enjoyed the event, where four members of crew who have volunteers for a total of 90 years were presented awards for their long service. They were Andrew Rice, who has served 30 years, and Lance Taylor, Tim Edwards and Brian Street, who have each served 20 years.

Senior helmsman Mr Edwards also picked up the award for crew member of the year.

Somewhat less serious presentations were the Bent Propeller Trophy won by Mark Colley and the Man Overboard award to John Rickard.

A special award – a photograph of the event – went to three members of the crew who were rescued by their own colleagues in August. An onlooker ashore thought kite surfers Elliott Herbert, Murray Saunders and Rich Tilley were in difficulties when the wind dropped a mile off Charmouth.

Lifeboat operations manager Nick Marks told party-goers at the Harbour Inn that 2018 had a been a successful year with almost 40 call-outs, around twice the total for the previous year.

More trainees had joined and the crew never once missed a launch because of a shortage of volunteers.

He added: “We have a very good team and we can take pride in having done our job pretty well.”
