Fatal accident at power boat racing event

EMERGENCY services were called to West Bay, Bridport, on Sunday, June 24 following a fatal crash during a power boat race.

Lyme Regis lifeboat crew were among those called to the incident, along with police, ambulance crews. West Bay coastguards and the Devon & Cornwall Air Ambulance.

One of the power boats taking part in the offshore circuit racing event overturned after colliding with another.  A 53-year-old man from Canterbury in Kent, understood to be the boat’s pilot, was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed and the coroner has been notified.

The boat’s female co-pilot was taken to Dorset County Hospital in Dorchester, where she was treated for shock. The other two passengers on the boat were not injured.

Police confirmed that the Marine Accident Investigation Branch had been informed of the incident and enquiries were underway to establish the full circumstances around the incident.
