Brass band players invited to join workshop

The workshop will be led by talented musician, composer and conductor Roderick Starr

LYME Regis Town Band is issuing an open invitation to all brass band players in the area to join a workshop it will be hosting on Saturday, May 4.

The Workshop will be led by talented musician, composer and conductor Roderick Starr, Mmus LRAM FISM.

Chairman of Lyme Regis Town Band, Paul Snowball, said: “Lyme Regis Town Band is delighted to welcome to the town such an accomplished musician as Roderick.  He was my bandmaster at HMS Osprey when I was with the Royal Navy Band, many years ago, and I was particularly thrilled when he agreed to work with us.”

Currently living near Chichester, Roderick is director of music and organist at St George’s Church in Waterlooville.  He composes music and teaches for Associated Board Theory examinations and is a Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music in conducting.

He also holds a Master Degree in 20th century composition and is a Fellow the Incorporated Society of Musicians.

Roderick initially studied the organ, prior to joining the Royal Marines School of Music. There he developed his skills as a composer and conductor before moving on to become a bandmaster and a director of music.  His study of harmony and composition has led to many commissions ranging from Christmas carols to large symphonic pieces.

Roderick has written a march entitled ‘General of the Sea’ as a tribute to Colonel Robert Blake, who is often referred to as the ‘Father of the Royal Navy’, and he has dedicated this work to Lyme Regis Town Band.

Paul explains: “During the workshop we will learn to play the march and we feel very lucky to have the rare opportunity to work on a piece of music with its composer. Anyone and everyone is most welcome to join us. Just come along, with your instrument, for what promises to be an exciting and very worthwhile day.”

The workshop will take place at the Woodmead Halls in Lyme Regis on Saturday, May 4 from 10.30am to 4pm. There is no entrance fee and all refreshments including lunch will be provided free of charge.  The only charge will be for parking in the adjacent car park.

As numbers are needed for catering purposes, call Paul on 07976 843 866 to book a place.
