NINE-TIME Grammy Award-winning country band Asleep at the Wheel will be visiting The Beehive in Honiton as part of their 50th anniversary tour of the UK.
Hailing from Austin, Texas, the eight-piece band – known as the undisputed ‘Kinds of Western Swing’ – will be appearing at the East Devon venue on Sunday, May 31.
A spokesperson for The Beehive said it was a “huge coup” for the venue to host one of only eight UK gigs the band will be performing for its 50th anniversary.
With founder member Ray Benson still very much at the helm, the band’s history is the stuff of legend and, over the years, they have shared stages with the likes of Bob Dylan, Alice Cooper, Hot Tuna, Lyle Lovett, Van Morrison, George Strait, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Ray Price, Reba McIntyre, Ricky Skaggs, Garth Brooks, Vince Gill and countless others.
The band has won nine Grammy Awards since its 1970 inception, released more than 20 albums and has charted more than 21 singles on the Billboard country charts. Their highest-charting single, ‘The Letter That Johnny Walker Read’, peaked at number 10 in 1975.
Such is their popularity in the UK, Bob Harris will be featuring an unprecedented eight Asleep at the Wheel tracks on his BBC Radio 2 Country Show leading up to the gig.
Whether you’re jiving in the aisles or just sitting and listening, you’re guaranteed to witness one of the highlights of the musical year at this special anniversary show, and catching rocking Americana at it’s very best.
Tickets cost £22 and are available at The Beehive or online at www.wegottickets.com/event/498117
