SINGERS aged five to 82 are busy rehearsing for Lyme Bay Chorale’s Christmas Concert, which will take place at St Michael’s Parish Church in Lyme Regis on Sunday, December 9.
For the first time, St Michael’s Children’s Choir – which recently impressed a packed church at the Remembrance Sunday service – will join the adult chorale for several parts of the concert, with some children singing solos.
Frankie Paveley, Ezra and Joel Jeffries and Amber Wilcox will be the pages in an arrangement of ‘Good King Wenceslas’ by Paul Halley, while chorale member Joss Kent will play the king.
The children will also sing in ‘Christus Natus Est’ by Cecilia McDowall and ‘Ding Dong Merrily On High’, arranged by Mack Wilberg.
Lyme Bay Chorale will perform the Poulenc ‘Gloria’ (1959), with soprano solo by well-known local singer Chloe Stratta, and two other pieces by Paul Halley – ‘Infinite Light’ and ‘Watt’s Cradle Hymn’. There will also be several audience carols.
St Michael’s Children’s Choir is made up of children from primary schools in the area and currently has about 14 members, the youngest of whom is just five years old. It is run by Alex Davies – director of music at St Michael’s Church and of Lyme Bay Chorale – and his wife Alison, who teaches music.
The choir’s last performance at the church was during the Remembrance Sunday service, when they gave a moving performance of ‘We Will Remember’ by Helen and Mark Johnson.
“We’re thrilled that we can involve the junior choir in this concert,” said Alex.
“They’ve been working very hard at rehearsals and Ali and I are confident that they will bring something very special to the performance – just as they did to the Remembrance Day service.”
Alex will play the organ in the concert, starting at 4pm, and Andrew Millington – formerly director of music at Exeter Cathedral – will conduct.
Tickets are £15 on the door or £13 in advance from Lyme Regis Tourist Information Centre, Penny Black Cafe (behind the post office) or choir members. Entry is free for ages 8 and under and tickets include a delicious buffet tea after the concert.
